Wavelength Dispersive Optics for Ultrafast X-ray Spectroscopy at LCLS

چکیده
Ultrafast X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) performed at an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) is a potentially very powerful tool to study numerous phenomena including dissociation in the gas phase , phase transitions in material science 2 and metal ligand charge transfer reactions 3 in coordination chemistry (for a recent review see ). At energies of 5-8 keV the LCLS is expected to provide pulses of order 10 photons within an energy band pass of < 8 eV. Such a band pass is not sufficient to perform single shot XAS, which requires > 30 eV for XANES and several hundred eV for EXAFS. In pump-probe experiments, using many pulses, it will in principle be possible to quickly vary the LINAC energy to provide a larger spectral range. But this approach is very challenging with regards to systematical errors inherent to XFEL radiation, most notably variations in pulse intensity, pulse energy distribution and time jitter.

Ultrafast Single Shot X-Ray Imaging of Magnetic Phase Transitions
We propose an experiment that makes full use of the unique capabilities offered by LCLS to image the critical fluctuations in a ferromagnetic film in the vicinity of its Curie temperature. The high intensity, femtosecond time structure, and coherence of the LCLS x-ray pulses will enable us to record ultrafast consecutive images of critical fluctuations using a newly developed lensless imaging t...
متن کاملUltrafast X-ray Science at the Sub-Picosecond Pulse Source
The ultrafast, high brightness x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) sources of the future have the potential to revolutionize the study of time dependent phenomena in the natural sciences. These linear accelerator (linac) sources will generate femtosecond (fs) x-ray pulses with peak flux comparable to conventional lasers, and far exceeding all other x-ray sources. The Stanford Linear Accelerator Ce...
متن کاملStart-to-End Simulations of the LCLS Accelerator and FEL Performance at Very Low Charge
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an x-ray Free-electron Laser (FEL) being commissioned at SLAC. Recent beam measurements have shown that, using the LCLS injector-linac-compressors, the beam emittance is very small at 20 pC. In this paper we perform start-to-end simulations of the entire accelerator including the FEL undulator and study the FEL performance versus the bunch charge. At 20...
متن کاملFemtosecond laser ablation of cadmium tungstate for scintillator arrays
Ultrafast pulsed laser ablation has been investigated as a technique to machine CdWO4 single crystal scintillator and segment it into small blocks with the aim of fabricating a 2D high energy X-ray imaging array. Cadmium tungstate (CdWO4) is a brittle transparent scintillator used for the detection of high energy X-rays and γ-rays. A 6 W Yb:KGW Pharos-SP pulsed laser of wavelength 1028 nmwas us...
متن کاملCompact 50-Hz terawatt Ti:sapphire laser for x-ray and nonlinear optical spectroscopy.
We report a high-repetition-rate, compact terawatt Ti:sapphire laser system. The oscillator produces an 82-MHz pulse train consisting of broad-bandwidth pulses of 0.5-nJ/pulse energy and of 9-fs pulse duration. The spectrally shaped, lambda/4 regenerative amplifier supports an 80-nm bandwidth. A single 50-Hz repetition-rate pump laser pumps both the regenerative amplifier and a multiple-pass am...
